Is your home more than 30 years old? If it is chances are the drain pipes are made from cast iron, which is very common in the greater Montreal area. After about 30 years these cast iron drain pipes can loose their integrity and slowly come to an "end or service life". The pipes can become badly corroded, forming small holes as in the photo below leading to issues such as leaks, flooding, bad odours, black mould and property damage. If you suspect your drain pipes could be around 30 years or more. We recommend you have them inspected for potential issues before a problem or drain disaster occurs. Below is an extreme example of a cast iron drain that has completely deteriorated. The main drain in this particular property had become blocked with a lot tree roots and the owner of the home had called us to unblock the drains after noticing sewage backing up in the basement. It was whilst our technicians were at the job site they discovered this broken section of pipes, this particular pipe was coming from a garage pit and going down into the basement floor and underneath the concrete. Over years and years of use (most likely washing down cars with detergents and the run off of lots of salts from the harsh winters here in Montreal) the pipes completely corroded and finally blew apart when the sewer main became backed up. Unfortunately this led to quite a bad mess in the basement. Jean FrancisOpperations Manager at Econo Drain Montreal
