Is your home more than 30 years old? If it is chances are the drain pipes are made from cast iron, which is very common in the greater Montreal area. After about 30 years these cast iron drain pipes can loose their integrity and slowly come to an "end or service life". The pipes can become badly corroded, forming small holes as in the photo below leading to issues such as leaks, flooding, bad odours, black mould and property damage. If you suspect your drain pipes could be around 30 years or more. We recommend you have them inspected for potential issues before a problem or drain disaster occurs.
Below is an extreme example of a cast iron drain that has completely deteriorated.
The main drain in this particular property had become blocked with a lot tree roots and the owner of the home had called us to unblock the drains after noticing sewage backing up in the basement. It was whilst our technicians were at the job site they discovered this broken section of pipes, this particular pipe was coming from a garage pit and going down into the basement floor and underneath the concrete. Over years and years of use (most likely washing down cars with detergents and the run off of lots of salts from the harsh winters here in Montreal) the pipes completely corroded and finally blew apart when the sewer main became backed up. Unfortunately this led to quite a bad mess in the basement.
High pressure jetting is hands down the best way of cleaning the inside of a pipe, and removing grease build up effectively. High pressure jetting can out perform a mechanical cable machine in less time and with less effort, at the same time giving you unparalleled results. High pressure jetting works with just water! so it's environmentally friendly, because it doesn't require any toxic chemicals that could be harmful to eco systems.
High pressure jetting is an essential service we provide for restaurants where grease build up is prolific ensuring the smooth running of the restaurants kitchen. Whether you have an apartment complex, multiplex or single dwelling home this service is perfect for maintaining full flow to the drains. High pressure jetting is used to thaw and unblock frozen drains and sewer pipes, whether a frozen main drain connected to a septic tank or a drain exposed to the elements. High pressure jetting is the perfect solution. The specialized nozzle with its numerous strategically positioned jets can easily cut through the ice, thawing out the pipe and bringing back the full flow of the drain. The High pressure jetting is also highly effective at cutting through tree roots which have infiltrated the drain system. This method can be used as a way of keeping your drains free from roots. High pressure jetting is also great If your budget doesn't permit a more expensive solution such as having the a drain liner installed or having an excavation to completely replace the drain which can cost several thousands of dollars compared to a high pressure jetting that is usually less than a thousand dollars. High pressure jetting can be performed in a very short amount of time, whilst clearing up to 99% of the roots. All high pressure jettings for roots include a drain camera inspection to assess the exact location of the roots in the pipes, with this information we can accurately cut the roots from the pipe with the high pressure jetter. A camera inspection is then performed with a digital recording either on a sd card or USB stick, which the client can make a copy for future reference. Once the high pressure jetting is complete we do one last inspection with the camera giving our clients an opportunity to see the results and giving them total peace of mind that the drain is completely clear.
Once roots have been cut out with the jetter, it is important to remember that the roots will grow back over time (usually many years), so we do recommend scheduling a camera inspection once a year to monitor the root growth and jetting whenever required.
Econo Drain would like to wish all our past and future clients a very happy Christmas and prosperous new year.
Did you know that the first signs of a clogged up, or backed up drain can be a foul odour and a glupping noise as the waste water (sanitary water) exits the drainage system and sometimes waste water may drain slowly. These are an indication that the drain pipes are becoming clogged with waste deposits such as grease and soap scum and it's time to have them cleaned. If you do notice one or more of these warning signs as described, don't let it continue until it becomes a bigger problem and prevent an untimely inconvenience or worse, a drain backup, which could result in damage to the property or even an insurance claim. Call a professional drain cleaning service to solve the problem and regain your peace of mind.
Here we have a 4" cast iron drain stack with a 4" concrete fibre pipe underground, which had deteriorated at the first two joints and had allowed gravel to infiltrate the sewer pipe leading to a complete blockage. The lower section of the stack was refitted with a new clean out for better access. The gravel completely removed and the old concrete fibre pipe replaced with 4" abs drain pipe. A final camera inspection reveals that the sewer is totally cleared.
Unblocking a drain with our high pressure jetting unit
One our most frequently used pieces of equipment is our commercial high pressure jetter unit, the jetter is capable of producing pressure in excess of 4000psi @ 10gpm which means it can easily unblock a drain, the real value though for this equipment is its amazing ability to fully clean the drain or sewer pipes. At the tip of the hose is a specific jetter nozzle matched to the job at hand, be it a root cutting nozzle, grease cutter or even for cutting through ice build up! It's these special jetter nozzles that produce such excellent results as far as cleaning and clearing a blockage in the drain.
High pressure jetting comes highly recommended as a solution for root intrusion in a main drain and for grease build up in kitchen drain lines, fully restoring the full flow back to the drain or sewer.
